ANTON SCHWARTZ, THE SLOW LANE, ANTONJAZZ 1002. Miyako / The Curve of the Earth / Don't Ask / Then Again / Along Came Betty / Chelsea Bridge / Come Rain or Come Shine / Peace Dollar / Born to be Blue / The Slow Lane / The Curve of the Earth (reprise). 70:00 Schwartz, ts; Paul Nagel, p; John Shifflett, b; Jason Lewis, d. 11/2-4/99, Berkeley, CA. Anton Schwartz's CD is all about straight, unadorned Jazz, specifically out of the Shorter and middle period Coltrane models. Schwartz has a luxuriant tone well suited to lovely ballads like "Chelsea Bridge" and "Miyako." On the more demonstrative tunes like "Don't Ask" the steelier qualities of his playing come out, invention, humor and a rich, robust tone. Nothing here is too radical. Schwartz's originals have attractive melodies and the standards like "Born To Be Blue" and "Come Rain Or Come Shine" are ravishing vehicles for his sound. The standout tune is probably the title track, an original soulful waltz that sounds a bit like the closing theme of "Saturday Night Live" and which Schwartz plays with soul worthy of David Sanborn. This man is an excellent saxophonist. |
