Pianist Mark Levine is as much on the forefront of the international jazz scene today as he was forty years ago. Beginning his career as a key member of the bands of such luminaries as Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw and Cal Tjader, he more often now leads his own projects. His recording Isla was Grammy nominated for Best Latin Jazz album of 2003, and his most recent CD Off & On was among the top five jazz albums of 2009 in the Village Voice's Critics Poll. If that weren't enough, he literally wrote the book on jazz piano: his classic The Jazz Piano Book, published in seven languages, is the most widely used text on the subject worldwide.

Joined by Mark's longtime cohort (and frequent loft concert contributor) John Wiitala and the extraordinary young drummer Hamir Atwal, Mark and Anton will offer up a selection of their own compositions and arrangements, as well as a few choice jazz standards.

The doors open at 7:30pm and music will start at 8:00—two sets with a half hour intermission. Before, between and after the music sets, there's time for folks to mingle and enjoy some wine or soft drinks and nibbles. You can see some photos of previous concerts in this photo album.

Seating is limited, so reservations are required -- see below. We ask for a contribution of per person, which covers the musicians, as well as the beverages, snacks, chairs, piano tuning and the like.

The loft is in an historic 1917 school building, three stories tall, recessed from the street. The space is comfortable and quick to get to from all directions -- you can find the address and directions here. Please go directly to unit #2, which has its own separate door on the left side of the front of the building. We'll open the doors one half hour prior to the performance. Do try to be there on time. Once the music begins, we will only be letting people in between songs. Please do not ring the doorbell while a song is in progress—you'll be able to hear that through the door.
