House Concert 26 Sunday, February 21, 2010, 3:00pm
Ed Cherry
Ed Cherry (guitar)
Suggested donation: We first met New York guitarist Ed Cherry when he came to perform at the loft with Sylvia Cuenca. Now he is in town backing up vocalist Paula West for a few weeks, so we're stealing him away for a Sunday afternoon concert. Ed's jazz lineage is truly first-rate. He was a member of Dizzy Gillespie's band from 1978 until 1992, and has worked extensively with the likes of Roy Hargrove, Henry Threadgill, Paquito D'Rivera and Jon Faddis. Even more importantly, he's got a gorgeous tone and a natural melodicism that transcends the finger-driven music one so often hears from guitarists. Joining Ed in the rhythm section will be the fantastic young drummer, Jerome Jennings, who is also in town from New York with Paula West, and Bay Area organ icon Wil Blades. Wil will be bringing his Hammond B-3 and a Leslie, so the afternoon will be rocking for sure. The doors open at 2:30pm and music will start at 3:00—two sets with a half hour intermission. Before, between and after the music sets, there's time for folks to mingle and enjoy some wine or soft drinks and nibbles. You can see some photos of previous concerts in this photo album. Seating is limited, so reservations are required -- see below. We ask for a contribution of per person, which covers the musicians, as well as the beverages, snacks, chairs, piano tuning and the like. The loft is in an historic 1917 school building, three stories tall, recessed from the street. The space is comfortable and quick to get to from all directions -- you can find the address and directions here. Please go directly to unit #2, which has its own separate door on the left side of the front of the building. We'll open the doors one half hour prior to the performance. Do try to be there on time. Once the music begins, we will only be letting people in between songs. Please do not ring the doorbell while a song is in progress—you'll be able to hear that through the door. Dinner suggestions:
