Anton Schwartz
The Slow Lane
AntonJazz

Remember the old cliche about West Coast hornmen playing it fast and light? Bay Area tenor man Anton Schwartz is among those putting that old saw to rest. His tone is considerable and his approach is from the classic sense of the post-Trane tenor sax. These elements being firmly in place, one might expect him to come roaring out of the gate. Instead he shows his homage to Wayne Shorter, who upon further listens clarifies as one of Anton's principle reference points. The opener is one of Wayne's loveliest and under-played ballads, "Miyako." Elsewhere he invests considerable feeling in "Along Came Betty", "Chelsea Bridge", "Come Rain or Come Shine," and Mel Torme's "Born To Be Blue." Otherwise Anton's skills are asserted in service to his own thoughtful originals. Information: 510/654-3221 or www.antonjazz.com
